Happy Tibb's Eve, as December 23 is known in Newfoundland.

Conditions were good on 48 m tonight.  It seems long skip again, since signals were skipping over listeners in Europe, but landing nicely here.  Cupid had a nice long show, and Boomerang had one of the strongest signals I have heard in a long time (but he did not stay on the air long).

Also, mw was fairly good.  Oliebollenbakker jumped the pond again and I heard Havana for the first time.

Very strange conditions tonight.  Signals faded in early, and kept improving until about 2000, then started to fade completely.  By 2100 (local sunset), 48 m was almost completely dead here, the same as in Europe!  Very unusual.

Despite the variable conditions, I was amazed to hear 4 new stations, Readymix, Luxemburg, Klabautermann and Zomerzon!  Great signals form Boomi and Undercover, as always.

Thursday, however, was fairly busy.  I just missed Radio Ronin special European broadcast (heard them c/d seconds after I turned on the radio).  Most stations were fairly weak (shortwave was just coming back after a blackout caused by a X1.4 solar flare), but I did hear Summermeeting Radio with a very good signal.

Yesterday I hooked up an antenna tuner (MFJ-948) to see if it would improve signals.  After comparing results with and without the tuner, it does give a few extra s points to strong signals on some bands (notably 19, 53 and 76 m), but seems to have little effect on 43 and 48 m.  Not sure if this is normal behaviour for a tuner, but I will take every s point I can get.
