There was a nice surprise in my in-box this morning.  All Aboard Radio sent me a nice QSL and full-data email for my post last night.  Thanks Casey!

Logs, May 27

QSLs from Tower & CoolAM, and Artem's World Music Show 12

No logs tonight, but I have received 2 new QSLs from Tower and CoolAM.  Thanks guys!

Artem has produced a new World Music Show (his 12th).  I just had a chance to finish listening to it, and it is another great job.  After a few African tunes (Guinea and Zimbabwe), the focus shifts to Puerto Rico, with many tunes and some off-air recordings from Artem's recent trip to the Dominican Republic.

As always, the show is available for relay by any interested free stations.  It can be downloaded at http://www.sendspace.com/file/e4yt74

It has been amazing that I have have heard some of CoolAM's signal each night this week.  He uses 20-25 watts into a one meter mobile antenna.

Obviously, I do not receive Cool with a booming signal, but it is quite surprising how well his signal manages to jump 4000 km.  For those who may be curious, here are a couple short audio files from this week.

http://www.mediafire.com/?cshdy9ax53d77ir
http://www.mediafire.com/?vfwc3lw72ukcba2

(remember, these are files from a ssb broadcast, so music is not clear )

Most ops uses dipole or inverted-V antennas, but I have also heard stations using other stick antennas, wall-mounted coils, even a metal roof.  It is surprising what can radiate a decent signal!

Logs, May 22 (23 UTC)

Logs, May 20 & 21, QSLs from Baltic Sea, CoolAM & Left Lane

Conditions have been amazingly good the last few nights.  Of course, it has not been busy, and my listening time is limited on weeknights, but the one benefit is that I have been arriving home around sunset, and benefiting from some nice grayline enhancement.

Cool AM has been incredibly consistent with his 20-25 watts and his little stick antenna.  Just goes to show you don;t need a full size dipole to jump the pond :-)

I have also received some very nice QSLs these past few days ... 3 from BSR, 1 from CoolAM Radio and one from Left Lane Radio.  Thanks guys!

It was very nice to hear two stations back on sw.  Fox 48 was back after a long absence, although still somewhat elusive, saving his best signal until just before c/d.   Wizard was also back with anew tx, and an excellent signal.

Logs May 9 and absolutely unique new QSL from Over 60 Dgr Radio

There was unusually loud, continuous static crashes tonight. Quite unusual for this location.

6280,0 . . 2327 . UNID, pop music (Dutch I think), listened to a few minutes, no announcements heard, (left the recorder running as I went for supper, but it failed), 34332

6245,0 . . 0016 . Shortwave Gold, pop music, weak signal tonight with ute QRM, finally caught an ID 0052, 23341

4026,0 . . 0054 . Laser Hot Hits, pop, ID, laser effects, 35342

I always enjoy receiving QSLs from stations for my reports.  They are fun to collect, and I think they give stations  "personality".

But when a station goes through the trouble to make a nice QSL uniquely for you ... that is special, and very much appreciated.  This is what Over 60 Dgr did this week, blending a map of Newfoundland with a hand tuning a radio.  I think he did an absolutely superb job of blending the images.  Definitely unique!

Wednesday 8 May 2013

Logs, May 8 (9 UTC)

The US band has been dead these past few nights, but I can always rely on Europe for good, free radio!

There were also carriers on 6735 (CoolAM?) and 7615 (Lightning?), but no audio tonight.

6245,0 . . 0010 . UNID, Alice Cooper “Poison”, Bee Gees “Staying Alive” continuous music (lots of good tunes), no announcements heard, 35342, still going 0150

4026,0 . . 0046 . Laser Hot Hits, ID, email, Cher “I Want You Back”, reading listeners’ emails, email and snailmail address, 34332, occasional brief ute (rtty?) QRM

Tuesday 7 May 2013

Logs, May 7 and new QSL from Over 60 Dgr Radio

Two regular stations are back on the air.  Laser has returned to 4026, and Lightning is back on 7615, which they used a couple of years ago.

6245,0 . . 2334 . UNID, continuous pop music, Fleetwood Mac (one of their lesser hits), similar music mix and signal as Radio Bops, but no ID heard, 35332, still going 0115

4026,0 . . 0000 . Laser Hot Hits, back on 4026, ID, laser effects, 80’s pop, 33332, some "machine gun" style QRM

7615,0 . . 0014 . Lightning Radio (presumed), repetitive, distinctly indie music on peaks, their website, http://lightningradio.co.nr/, confirms that they have resumed transmissions on 7615

Update re Russian pirate on 7605:
I thought that this might be worth mentioning, since this blog has had a lot of recent visitors from Russia.  I did not hear any audio on 7605 last weekend, but I did hear a very weak carrier on (if my memory is correct) 7604,6 kHz.  I was chatting with a listener from the Ukraine at that time, who was hearing music on the exact same frequency.  Considering the small transmitting antenna being used, I am shocked that I heard even a carrier (and, of course, I cannot be sure of the source).  But I would encourage any Russian operators for future tests.

QSL:
There has not been much time for sending reports lately (what free time I have had, I have spent listening), but Over 60 Degree Radio was nice enough to send me this great new QSL for my logs Friday night.  As usual, a map based theme.  Thanks Mike!

Monday 6 May 2013

Logs, May 5

It was the first really warm, sunny day of the spring here yesterday, so I was a little late getting to the radio.  Not that it mattered, because signals faded in very late, and were very weak all night.  Just a few logs, and not a lot of detail.

6930,9 . . 0051 . SDF1 Radio, weak signal, instrumental music, possible IDs, but a little too weak to copy, ID via HFU, 24341

Sunday 5 May 2013

Logs, May 4

Happy Easter to all my Orthodox friends!

Not many logs last night.  Signals were late fading in, and it was a fairly quiet night on sw.  There were only traces on mw.  The best signal of the night was TRX, who had a long show of good tunes.  Over 60 Degree tested on numerous freqs, and a couple provided some weak audio (always nice to hear o60d!).

6305,0 . . 2141 . TRX Radio, Elvis “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Night and Day”, “Sandman”, other oldies, ID, long show and very good signal, 35443

6992,0L . 2158 . Baltic Sea Radio, ID, email, “The Twist”, “Rock This Town”, 24442

Logs, May 3

I turned on the radio around 2015 last night, and I could hear traces of many stations, including Underground (6286), Telstar (6305), Caroline (6326), PL 6540 and BSR (6995L).  But only Mustang was loud enough for details at this early time, and the other stations were c/d when I returned from supper.  (The late sunsets are really limiting the trans-Atlantic window.)

Signals were fairly good, once sunset finally arrived, and even low-power stations Cool AM and Over 60 Degree made brief appearances.  Thanks to all the stations for an enjoyable night of listening.

Russian pirate on 7605 kHz now until May 5

also from dxing.ru:

The pirate station formerly on 8001 kHz is now on 7605 until May 5.  Power is 10-15 W, and the antenna seem small, but maybe some listeners in Europe can hear the signal (not even a carrier detectable here tonight).

Programming consists of continuous music with no announcements (previous shows had classical music, I believe).

(Note:  Freq may vary from 7605 by 1-2 kHz, but be aware that Lightning Radio from Hungary may be testing on 7600 again.)

The email for the station is  kw37@ya.ru

The following is a poor translation from dxing.ru"

"Hello everyone! Turn on the transmitter on the frequency 7605kgts for all holidays until May 5. Pomonitorte AMPs., Who will have the time. Muses. Instrumental tracks of the AM modulation. Just for fun connected full-size Framework horizontal antenna height of 1/10 wave. Far more likely will not pass, AZI antenna and power of a small 10-15W. The frequency of such a free, except for some wire manipulation in the morning at 09.11 MSK time. The test is conducted on a telegraph Mayachka - dead zone was not more than 20 km, more was heard at the level of the signal in the line of sight"

Radio Zeleny Glazh (Green Eyes) - Moscow student station on air May 7

Not a pirate station, but a worthwhile student project, and a good possible dx catch.

From dxing.ru

"Individual Broadcast radio broadcast, "Green Eyes" will air on May 7 at 16:00 on frequency 25900 kHz, will be devoted to Radio Day - anniversary of the opening Popov method transmitting information via radio waves and the invention of the world's radio."

The station is run by students of the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (MTUCI). Transmitter power is 400 watts.

They normally broadcast every Friday from 12-15 UTC on 25900, so this seems like an extra broadcast.

The process of the setting up of this station is covered in the blog "Forum for discussion of legalization Individual broadcasting" at http://tubes.radiostation.ru/arb/index.php.
