A great song for the radio man (or woman)

Over the past few years, I have been fortunate to hear a lot of new music from free stations in Europe.  Polkas, Dutch pop, 60's and 70's British artists who never jumped the pond, and much, mush more.

I have enjoyed it immensely, and I thought I would share a little Newfoundland music with you.

Picture this.  Imagine a stadium full of people jumping to their feet and cheering at the sound of morse code coming over the speakers.  Ridiculous?  Well, that is exactly what happens when Newfoundland band Great Big Sea takes the stage with their hit song "Ordinary Day".

Not a fan of morse?  Irish readers may be surprised by some of the musical instruments, and some Dutch readers may enjoy the accordion solo ;-).  And everyone should relate to the chorus. :-)

To get the live experience, see this video of their concert in Ottawa, Canada:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_aie7UXh9A
(for better audio, check the "official" music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wcjBU8zbdY)

By the way, Great Big Sea is Newfoundland's greatest musical export.  They have spent decades bringing their unique version of traditional Newfoundland music around the globe.  If you enjoy this song, there are lots of youtube videos to sample, from very traditional Irish jigs to an excellent cover of REM's "It's the End of the World as We Know It".  And the ultimate pirate shanty "Captain Kidd"! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hyhiqq-FzDU

Enjoy!
